Abstract | Gregorio del Olmo Lete examines the history and character of the Canaanite religion based upon the evidence from Ugarit (Ras Shamra) in ancient Syria. He exposes the pantheon as well as the liturgy of the religion of Ugarit as they become apparent in mythological and cultic texts. The focus is laid on the role of the kings, both during their lifetime and in their afterlife as divinized rulers and heroes within the funerary cult of the palace. An exposition of letters, prayers, incantations and personal names enables a characterization of the religion of everyday life. The study is now supplemented by numerous photos of the texts under discussions and has been completely revised and enlarged. |
