Abstract

The article presents an examination into the literary theme of the tearing of the heavens and the tearing of the temple veil as described in the Biblical Gospel of Mark. Topics addressed include highlighting the repetition of the motif of tearing at both the baptism and the death of Jesus Christ, comments on the "symbolic inclusio" which brackets the entire Gospel, and various interpretations of the trope by scholars Howard Jackson and the ancient scholar Josephus.
